Canvas & Community: Honoring Culture and Creativity in Grand Prairie
An Art and Literature Spotlight on the Select Rosie Foundation
Today’s Art and Literature Community Spotlight is brought to us by Angela Edgecombe, Fellow Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce Member and Author of The Edgecombe Heritage Cookbook
On June 28, 2025, I had the privilege of attending a beautiful, innovative, and deeply inspiring African Art Exhibition held at the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce. The evening was hosted by Chamber member Rosalie Ilunga, founder and CEO of the Select Rosie Foundation and TECA (The Empowered Creative Academy). Artwork from Samuel Ilunga was on display at the event which was attended by The Congolese Community of Dallas Fort Worth.
These two community-driven organizations provide workshops in art, culinary arts, and event planning for displaced women and youth, helping them build skills, confidence, and meaningful futures.
A Night of Culture, Connection & Celebration
The exhibition opened with a heartfelt prayer by Father Jules Omba, followed by the singing of both national anthems — the United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
From there, the celebration continued with:
Keynote speakers honoring Rosalie’s mission and recognizing the artists
Artwork for sale, including copper statues, masks, jewelry, paintings, and vibrant cloth
The rhythm of African music and traditional dance
Delicious African cuisine, including rice, beignets, and refreshing beverages
Each piece, each plate, each performance told a story of identity, resilience, and the power of creativity.
Behind the Vision: Rosalie Ilunga
Rosalie is not only a leader — she is a community cultivator. Through her leadership, TECA and the Select Rosie Foundation have empowered dozens of women and young people, thanks to sponsorships by local businesses and talented artists like Samuel Ilunga.
These programs are more than workshops — they are launching pads for new chapters, skill development, and dignity.
